An assignment.

Three posts in one day? Katie must need to procrastinate!

But first, a confession: Sometimes I stick a non-textbook into my pile of textbooks that I need for class and when they are all put on the same bill, it's like I didn't really waste money, because the bill is a textbook bill and those don't count.

Today I had to buy three books for class, and because the prof orders the books through a great local bookstore, I perused the shelves. I have recently heard of Miranda July and am enjoying her book of short stories, so I was thrilled to find this new book.

It inspired me to give assignments on my blog (also good preparation for academe). Here's your first assignment:

Write a paragraph about what you think I do. You can email it to me or post it in the comments. If you email it, let me know if you want it to remain unpublished or anonymous. If you want, I'll write a paragraph for you about what you do in return.

Please do this! It will be fun! I won't be mad if you have no idea what I'm doing, because really, I have no idea what I'm doing myself. Perhaps it will bring clarity. And I'll be grateful.

Just so you know, I have a large paper due tomorrow that I should be working on, but instead I am writing this.

What KTZ does:

Katie helps prevent forest fires. Katie goes to school (hard school). Katie studies a lot for school. Katie is responsible for raising another human being. Katie has a job advising international students, and it was once located in the arena where they have rodeos. Katie calls me for no reason. Katie complains about how much reading she has to do, but then buys lots of books for pleasure. Katie loves me. Katie lets me see that tootsie roll.

Isaac's response:

My mom is a very good mom. She takes care of me and she is special. I'm thankful to have her. She studies very good for her phd and I have to give her advice sometimes, I don't care because I have bunches of time to do stuff with her, she's the best.

She sometimes lets me have dessert before supper. That's the one thing I LOVE about my mom. She's the best when I'm sad, cranky or happy.

She's studying Development Studies. I don't know what that means. I think she's studying about...um...human labor markets. She also likes to read with me and she reads over 100 pages each and every single night about development studies and it's pretty hard to have that kind of homework for real.

If you have a kid and you're studying development studies, you've got to tell them that you are gonna have a hard time and they should give you advice, that's what I always try to do.

Katie reads and reads and reads and then she writes and writes and writes. Sometimes, she talks. And other times, she drinks coffee. Occasionally, she trips :)

Let start from your own statement "I have no idea what I'm doing myself". It is not true at all. You know what you are doing. Getting your PhD for the future of your life and to travel around the world. Your family is waiting for that beautiful time.

KT likes to intrigue people and get them to check things out, like what's going on in other areas of the world and what the youtube video is about, so you better tell me. KT is raising an incredibly cool son who knows more and cares more about humanity than the average kiddo his age. KT goes to school & works, very, very hard at succeeding in a goal that most can't even imagine. KT is cool & I hope I get to hang w/ her soon. SunnyD
