Doggie Blues.

After my joyous post about how Che had recovered, the vet told my mom that his blood levels were not what they should be, and that he has terminal kidney failure. She gave him until Christmas to live. My mom brought him home with a bunch of medicine and an IV that we were supposed to give him under his skin every 12 hours. This weekend was horrible!

I bawled all weekend and held him and slept with him, and when I had to hold him still for the IV he cried.

But it seems like he's doing fine now. I don't know how it is with kidney failure, but he is eating and drinking (and peeing) like normal. He's even running around attacking Shadow. So I'm hoping that a miracle occurred. We're getting a second opinion today.

Please, if you believe in a benevolent universe, send healthy doggie vibes his way. I can't stand the thought of losing him!

hi
i know exactly how you feel. we have a dog that also had kidney disease 3 years ago and almost passed on. Im glad to say that he is very much alive and healthy (thanks God) but it takes a certain bit of care. basically, vet gave you the IV because dogs (and humans) with kidney problems need major rehydration for the rest of their lives and the IV will get him over the hump. our dog was also on an IV for a while and now we basically make sure he has lots of water and he also needs a special diet (science diet has one called Canine KD). we also have taught him to drink water in the morning before we leave them in the backyard and in the evening once we get home. so with the diet and lots of water he is fine. we also check his blood levels once a year during vaccinations and even though they are higher than his brothers, the counts stabilized. once in a while he doesnt drink enough and i have a turkey baster that I stick in his mouth and force (i know it sounds bad but it doesnt hurt him at all if you take it slow) him to drink water but this is very infrequent, like once every 6 months.
Dont worry, dogs (and humans) with kidney problems can live a full life.

I'm saying a little prayer for Che; I'm rooting for the little guy! Christmas is a time for miracles.

I'm saying a prayer in Spanish since Che is a revolutionary from South America--
